I just completed my Member of excellence forms and would like to encourage everyone else to do so if you haven't yet. This is a great tool to show our growth and benifits of this great organization.

I love leading the Northern Virginia Chapter.  My leadership skills left a lot to be desired when we started the chapter two years ago.  I would go a stop further to say that I lost a few members because of my lack of good leadership skills.

I have learned that when people volunteer their time, you cannot force them to do anything, but you need to show them appreciation when they do something. Now, the best feeling in the world is when I come home from a bad day at work and I read mail from my members and they thank me for something I’ve done.   We encourage each other. [more]

I just finished reading in the May/June 2012 Issue of OfficePro about moonlighting as a virtual assistant.  I found the article to be rather misleading.  One this the author failed to mention is when you run a business out of your home, you still need to apply for a business license and DBA.  You also need a website which can vary in price, business cards, etc. just like any other business.  I know because I launched my VA business in January of this year and closed it in March simply because no one was interested in this sort of service.  I heavily marketed, made cold calls, and did whatever it took to secure a client.  More money was going out the door than in.  I had worked as an admin for 30 years and figured this would be perfect for me.  I was wrong and glad I got out of it because my debt raised even more.  I don't recommend getting in this type of business. I have submitted my Member of Excellence form for both the International and the Division's programs.

I hope that you too will submit your form or at least see what the criteria are and try to set goals to accomplish great things. IAAP is such a wonderful organization and has some of the most talented men and women and this program is one way to set the bar high for yourself and to stay competitive in the workplace.

IAAP members are a passionate group. They're serious about being the best at their jobs. A cursory glance at the IAAP Web Community reveals people who are focused and determined. This is a good thing, but can it tip over into something that has a negative impact on your personal and professional success? That's the question posed by a couple of recent blog posts on the Harvard Business Review. [more]
